Bear Sign - Have You Eaten Yours Today?

Published by ktolman at 2:03 am under Historical Anecdotes Edit This

Bear sign is another term for doughnuts (or donuts if you prefer) that appears throughout the Louis L’amour novels.  Bear sign is also a term used to describe the marks and signs that a wild bear would leave in the woods, including dung.

Today in the United States we continue to call certain pastries bear claws – very likely a continuation of the tradition of “bear sign” but without the connotation associated with dung.

Donuts also go by a number of other names including sinkers, crullers, bismarks, and bars, some of which have come to be their own type of pastry though all share a common history and common ingredients.  These deep fried delicacies remain an American favorite though certainly this type of treat is known world wide by many names and comes in many shapes.
